Throwback Thursday: Video Edition - Good Charlotte

I don't know if you would call it irony or maybe foreshadowing, but in the end Good Charlotte pretty much ended up becoming what they were singing about in this song...

Still feeling a bit nostalgic? Check out last week's Throwback Thursday Video

New trend in YouTube videos...

We’re seeing more and more of these acoustic guitar cover videos every day. Soon they will surpass Mash-ups and Isolated vocal videos on Youtube.

Slightly Bruised Taylor Swift Apples???

Everyone is talking about Taylor Swift getting corporate giant Apple to change their plans and pay artists during the free trail period of their new music streaming offering, Apple Music.

It all started with Miss Swift alluding that she would not allow her music to be available on Apple Music if artists weren't getting paid.

Everyone commended her for stepping up and the accolades grew once Apple announced that they decided to switch and will now pay artists during this period.

THANK YOU TAYLOR SWIFT...

But something seems fishy to me in this.

Why is Taylor Swift the only artist we're hearing complaining about artist not getting paid during the trial period? There must have been others who complained. Why were their no other artists rallying to support Taylor Swift and get behind her threatening to pull her music?

Then I noticed something. Every single report, feature, blog, post, etc talking about Taylor Swift and Apple mentions the FREE TRIAL PERIOD. Sure that is a key part of the story, it why Miss Swift supposedly posted her comment in the first place, but could this simply be a publicity stunt to create awareness about Apple Music?

When you think about it, yes the artists benefit from Apple now saying they will get paid during the trial period...but with how much this was in the news over the past couple of days, how much free publicity did not Apple Music get, but the fact that they're going to be offering a free trial period of the streaming service?

In an era where a large portion of the music consumers are under the impression that music is free, what do you think they took away from all the media coverage? That the artists will now get paid or that they could get access to a streaming music service for free?

The other thought that popped into my head was, did Miss Swift's sales increase due to this media attention? Did people rush to iTunes and buy her music before it was to be pulled? Will Taylor Swift be the first artists Apple Music users look for when they first get access? I know when I first went onto Napster after hearing about their battle with Metallica, Metallica was the first artist I looked up.

I could be totally wrong on these assumptions and if there is anything I'm missing that's been said by either party to prove my theory wrong, please let me know. The music industry, more specifically musicians need someone to be our hero...personally I'd rather it be someone like Dave Grohl rather than Taylor Swift...but a hero is a hero and if she's the one stepping up to the plate, hopefully it's for legit reasons. I'd hate for her intentions to be tarnished.

Throwback Thursday - Video Edition

(hed) P.E. - Blackout

I remember servicing this track to radio. I honestly thought it would do pretty well at rock radio, but never did. I did get The Bear in Edmonton to add it into their evening rotation, which I'm somewhat proud of. That was over 10 years ago but thanks again Park for giving it a chance!

Building a Brand on Instagram?

In December Instagram hit 300 million month users, surpassing Twitter by 16 million users. The photo app is a great way for people to engage and share with others. Instagram has tried to stay away from opening it's network up to advertising, but back in March Instagram started allowing brands to include links back to their produce. The visual interactive aspect of Instagram make it a value tool when it comes to building a brand. If used correctly, Instagram can help build your brand.

Below is an info graphic, put together by Kissmetrics, that highlights the best times to post, the most engaging filters and colours, and how to increase your following on the platform.

Elders React To Slipknot

Edmonton's Sonic 102 shared this earlier today.

I remember 'Elders' saying similar things about Twisted Sister and Motley Crue back in the 80's. Makes me wonder what artists my generation will make similar comments about once we reach the age group that's makes us "Elders"?

Bassist Beats Bears Battlestar Galactica

Okay...I can admit I'm biased being a bassist, but I can honestly say that a lot of what is said in this article is how I've always felt about playing the bass...think what you want, but in the end its the bass that brings the band together.

Science Suggests Bassists Are Far More Important Than Most People Realize
When Led Zeppelin's bassist John Paul Jones was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995, he made a classic bass joke. "Thank you to my friends for finally remembering my phone number," he said, looking over at the rest of the band.
Like any good joke, there's some truth to it: Bassists are criminally overlooked and underappreciated members of most every band. Yet there's scientific proof that bassists are actually one of the most vital members of any band. There are powerful neurological and structural reasons why our music needs bass. It's time we started treating bassists with the respect they deserve.

Throw Back Thursday - Video Edition

Our Lady Peace - Birdman

I remember seeing this video while I was in my first year of University. A few weeks later I got to see Our Lady Peace open for I Mother Earth at Sammy's Grape Escape in Saskatoon. I believe the venue only held 150 people. I was primarily there to see I Mother Earth, but Our Lady Peace's performance had an impact and I quickly became a fan.

I ended up hanging with drummer Jeremy Taggart and bassist Chris Eacrett. Chris even took me on stage and showed me his bass rig and showed me what he did to get his tone before the show started. For the young wanna be rockstar, it was fairly cool to not only go on stage and see his gear but get some advice.
