Even if you build it, they won't come.

I think one of the worst movies ever is Field Of Dreams. Not that it’s a bad movie or that Kevin Costner is annoying in it. My issue with Field Of Dreams revolves around the one line it is famous for. “If you build it, they will come” This line has grown above and beyond the movie, integrating itself into our pop-culture and daily lives. Sometimes said in jest but often given as advice, the simplicity of the statement makes it almost believable.  Sadly, “If you build it, they will come” is actually really bad advice.

When it comes to building your brand, you can create the most amazing brand in the universe but if no one ever sees it what impact will that have? It’s more than just building something. I remember seeing Field Of Dreams when it first came out, and even then the line and movie bugged me. I remember thinking “but how do they know the baseball field is even there?” “What made them want to come?” Whether you’re promoting a show, your CD or simply yourselves you need to tell someone. Posting something on facebook or tweeting about it isn’t enough. You need to find ways to engage others and get them talking about your product or whatever you’re promoting. You can’t assume people will find out, you need to assume no one knows.

Ask yourself who should be there, who’s attention do you need to get and then go to them. Don’t wait for them to come to you. Don’t get hung up on what you think you should be doing, think more about where should you be? Get to know your target audience and where they’re already going, what they’re already focusing on and join them there. If you’re looking at social marketing, focus your activities don’t blanket message the masses. Regardless of the promotional channel, you don’t exist until you tell people you exist and until then, if you don’t exist you are even easier to ignore. If you build it, don’t forget to go get them or they won’t come.

Free SXSW Sampler from Dine Alone Records

I can sometimes be a bit of a hypocrite. When artists ask me if they should give away their music for free, I tend to tell them don't using the analogy of free samples at Costco not creating regular customers for that specific free product. But when other artists or labels are giving away free music, I tend to be the first to jump on board and share the link.

Over the years I've downloaded a handful of Dine Alone Free Samplers and even though I'm often excited to get them, thinking back I rarely go back and listen to them or I find myself surprised that a specific artist was on the sampler, having bought their album or single online and then seeing it's already in my library.

Anyways...keeping with tradition I'm once again going to share the link to download Dine Alone's free sampler for SXSW. Enjoy!

My 2014 Predictions Coming True...U2 New Album Delayed???

Near the end of December 2013 I share my prediction for the music industry in 2014. Lots of people do this every year in Dec, but I rarely see anyone actually following up and sharing if any of their predictions came true or not...so I decided I'd do that. If some of my predictions become true or it becomes fairly obvious that the prediction is not going to come true, I'll blog about it.

Another one might be becoming a reality...here's what I predicted...

New U2 Album Will Be A Flop – This prediction is more of a gut feeling. There seems to be a lot of buzz and talk about the upcoming new U2 album. First there were the rumors about its release, then the tie into the Nelson Mandela movie and then other stories about U2 parting ways with their long time manager and making appearances at small club shows and sitting in with cover bands at weddings. Bono was even out busking (supposedly a Christmas tradition) in his hometown over the holidays. With all this hype, my gut is telling me the album will be a flop. Sure you’ll probably hear the first official single all over the radio and there will be some significant sales out of the gate, but the hype will fade quickly and we’ll spend less time talking about the album than was spent hyping the release.

Billboard Magazine announced today that the new U2 album is going to be delayed till 2015. (CLICK HERE to see the article). Since late 2013 U2 has been everywhere, making appearances leading up to the release of this new album and now it's delayed...in the article they even noted that the band has scheduled additional sessions with their producers. Maybe U2 read my predictions for 2014 and decided to reconsider releasing the album...

The Project Manager

I follow a variety of blogs that offer ‘advice’ to independent artists, all of which pretty much offer the same advice, but the other day I actually came across something new. Not only was it some new advice but it was actually some good advice as well.

I often get asked “should we get a manager?” and for the most part the artists asking me this aren’t at the point in their career where they need a manager. For the most part, this perceived need for a manager comes from having to manage a variety of different things that some individuals may find hard to do, tiresome or just don’t have the patience for. They don’t need a manager, just someone to take some of the tasks off their plate so they can focus on the ‘important’ things or in some cases what they think are the important things.

The new concept that I was introduced to me in the blog was for artists to get a “Project Manager”. What makes a project manager different from a manager is this role is more of a point-person in charge of projects, ensuring all important events are well-planned, efficiently organized, professional and effectively run. This role could assist in a variety of projects, CD release events, tours, video launch parties, radio distribution and promotion, what ever and where ever the band could use some help or even guidance.

Now the guys who run this blog/podcast just happen to also provide artists with these services, but I don’t fault them for using their blog to, maybe even unintentionally, promote themselves. Technically seeing how I offer similar services, posting about it myself is also a little bit of self-promotion, but in the end I (and the individuals who posted this blog) firmly believe that this is an area where artists can use some help and guidance. Bringing a project manager on board can help alleviate stress and ensure the little things that NEED to get done, get done.

The podcast goes on to share tips and ideas to help on working with a project manager smoothly, even suggesting some apps that can also help with project management. You can view the blog/podcast here.

If you’d like to know more about what a project manager can do for you, let me know, I’d love to talk about it further (yes…another shameless plug).

My predictions coming true...Apple Launching iOS in cars?

Near the end of December 2013 I share my prediction for the music industry in 2014. Lots of people do this every year in Dec, but I rarely see anyone actually following up and sharing if any of their predictions came true or not...so I decided I'd do that. If some of my predictions become true or it becomes fairly obvious that the prediction is not going to come true, I'll blog about it.

Another one might be becoming a reality...here's what I predicted...

Internet In Cars – This prediction is probably fairly obvious. There seem to be daily posts about how much closer this is to becoming a reality. The car manufactures are pushing for it. Internet providers are extending their reach so that you can access their internet anywhere. Being able to access the internet in your vehicles is just around the corner. The big question is what would be the ramifications once this step is made. How will it impact radio? Music streaming services? How we drive? Will ‘distracted driving’ laws need to be more strictly enforced?

And here's a link to an article Alan Cross posted today...

iOS In The Car Leak

As I mentioned in my original prediction, this one seemed pretty obvious...but still I think it's kind of exciting.
