Starbucks Red Cup Controversy...

The Starbucks Red Cup Christmas Controversy is ridiculous. I don’t even know how someone could come up with such a ridiculous theory…unless that someone was already drinking out of a red cup if you know what I mean.

Here’s some random thoughts I came up with about the Red Cup controversy.

When you mix the letters from “Red Cup” around it spells…nothing.

Someone call Indiana Jones, we found the cup of Christ, the Holy Grail…It’s at Starbucks, red and has nothing to do with Christmas (aside from being Red).

When you order your drink at Starbucks they write you name on it with a black Sharpie. When at a social gatherings you’re encouraged to write your name on your Red Solo Cup with a Sharpie so that you don’t loose it. Coincidence?

Do you think that thanks to the Starbuck Red Cup Christmas Controversy Toby Keith’s “Red Solo Cup” will get played a lot more over the coming weeks?

Toby Keith just released a new album in Oct, could this be a publicity stunt to draw more attention to Toby Keith?

Does Starbucks like Toby Keith?

Could there be a secret partnership between Starbucks and Toby Keith to market Toby Keith to the coffee drinking audience?

Throwback Thursday - BMG Unheard Music Week 4

In September I featured videos from some of my favourite artists that I worked with during my time with BMG. That seemed to go over pretty well, so I decided to extend it to this month, but with a slight difference. 

For the month of Oct I will not only be featuring music from my BMG days, but the music will be from artists that we (BMG Team) were introduced to but that was pretty much it. In some cases the album was only released as an 'import' in other case, nothing was released at all. 

This week's throwback is to a band called American Pearl. Their debut album was actually released by Wind-Up which was distributed by Sony (pre-BMG merger) in Canada, but in the U.S. Wind-Up had a deal with BMG for distribution and because of that American Pearl was one of the bands showcased at the BMG National Conference. We got to see a full live show with them and Corrosion Of The Conformity (another band we weren't going to be distributing in Canada). For me this showcase was probably the biggest tease. 

Never saw much about American Pearl after the conference aside from having a track on the Scream 3 sound track. 

Cross Contributions

Started a new weekly feature last week "Stuff I Shared With Alan Cross or (via Danny)"...this week I decided to rename the feature. Cross Contributions

What's this feature all about?

For a while now I've been forwarding a variety of music related articles, videos, posts, etc to Alan Cross, some of which he has in turn posted on his "A Journal Of Musical Things" website. 

If you regularly follow Alan Cross, you may have seen some of my submissions. My contributions have always included a (via Danny) at the end. 

If you don't follow Alan Cross, well that also part of the reason why I'm going to start posting stuff on my blog as well.

In September I featured videos from some of my favourite artists that I worked with during my time with BMG. That seemed to go over pretty well, so I decided to extend it to this month, but with a slight difference. 

For the month of Oct I will not only be featuring music from my BMG days, but the music will be from artists that we (BMG Team) were introduced to but that was pretty much it. In some cases the album was only released as an 'import' in other case, nothing was released at all. 

For all of these, I remember watching official music videos, but when I decided to do this theme, I couldn't find the official original video on YouTube. 

So here's the next artist and song in this series of Throwback Thursday music selections...

Tarsha Vega "Be Your Self" - for this artists I remember getting the CD single, seeing the video, she may have even been showcased at one of the BMG conferences I attended. We never saw anything officially released by her after that...maybe it was available as an import. The song ended up on the Rocky & Bullwinkle Soundtrack though...

Back To The Future Day,,,

Okay...so today is the date that Marty McFly goes to in the future in the Back To The Future trilogy. Oct 21st, 2015.

I've already seen a lot of posts pointing out the obvious things that were shown in the movie that we don't have today. Flying cars. Hover boards. Etc.        

There is actually a very simple explanation as to why we don't have any of these technological advances today. An explanation that is actually given in the movie.

The whole premise of the movie series is when travelling through time, your actions in the past can have ramifications on the future.

In the future, Marty isn't working at his dream job. We actually see Marty get fired from his future self's job. We later find out that Marty's future life isn't what he dreamed it would be, thanks to a car accident Marty got in after being called a chicken. It was in this accident where he hurt his form arm or wrist I believe. It's this injury that impacted Marty's life moving forward.

In the third movie, we get to see the scenario develop which leads to the accident where Marty make his live changing injury, only instead of socuming to the rival racer's chicken taunts. When the light turns green, Marty does not participate in race and we get to see where the accident would've happen had he participated.

Marty avoiding the accident then would've changed his life moving forward. But, as we also learn in the movie series when you change something in the past, it not only changes your future, it also impacts everyone else's future.

So that being said...Marty avoiding the car accident would've changed the future we saw in the second film. And because more than just Marty's life would've been impacted by this, there is a chance that this change could have lead to the individuals who invented the Hover Board or the technology that made cars fly taking different paths in life and never achieving these technological advances.

You want to know why we don't have hover boards today...it's because Marty didn't race.

Now typically my blogs are music related, so for anyone hoping for some music reference....

Throwback Thursday - The BMG Daze...

Continuing with the theme of looking back on my time with BMG Music...

I was a fan of Butch Walker LONG before I even started working with BMG. In University I got an opportunity to interview him and the Marvellous 3 for the University news paper and even earlier than that I was a member of his band Southgang's fan club. Turns out I was the only fan club member from Saskatchewan (we found out during the Marvellous 3 interview). 

So needless to say, I was pretty excited to hear that BMG was going to be releasing Butch Walker's first solo CD.

Throwback Thursday - The BMG Daze...

For the month of Sept I thought I'd focus on some specific artists from a specific time in my life, so for the next couple of weeks my throw backs will be to my time with BMG and some of my favourite artists and tracks that I worked with.

Skrape seemed like a fitting video to post this week, as I was at a music workshop this week and actually used them as an example when were discussing branding. 

Probably one of my favourite bands from the BMG days that hardly anyone has heard of...(also one of the grossest album covers ever...see below)
